Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist I, II, III or IV (2 positions available)

Two (2) positions are available for hire.
The Hydro Data Collection Specialist I, II, III, or IV performs hydrologic, meteorologic, and water use data collection, processing and quality assurance.  Multiple levels have been assigned to this classification, dependent on the degree of responsibility and complexity of tasks assigned. 

Job Duties Include:

HDS I:

  • Measures and records hydrometeorological data including water levels, rainfall, net and total radiation, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity and evaporation. 
  • Assist in installation, calibration, testing, validation and maintenance of hydrometeorologic instrumentation used in hydrometeorologic data collection. 
  • Measures and records pump run times at agriculture irrigation systems 
  • Maintains field notes and data collection documentation in paper and electronic form. 
  • Uses portable and desktop computers in the field and office to perform data collection activities. 
  • Contacting agricultural water use permittees to collect permissions for water use monitoring through power use estimation or other types of monitoring, has permittee sign authorizations 
  • Assist in conducting vertical elevation surveys at monitoring locations 
  • Assist in conducting discharge measurements 
  • Assists in putting together materials orders 
  • Train for the next level in the Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist series. 
  • Performs other related work as required 

HDS II:

  • All Level 1 Examples of Work Performed in addition to the following: 
  • Installs, calibrates, tests, validates and maintains hydrometeorologic instrumentation used in hydrometeorologic data collection. 
  • Designs, constructs and installs monitoring sites. 
  • Assists in troubleshooting and repairing hydrometeorologic instrumentation used in hydrometeorologic data collection 
  • Interact with District databases that store hydrometeorologic data and supporting documentation. 
  • Uses ultrasonic flow meter at Agriculture water use monitoring locations to collect flows 
  • Uses acoustic velocity meters, and vertical axis current meters to measure discharge at hydrologic monitoring sites 
  • Meets with landowners and appropriate staff to coordinate the collection of hydrometeorologic data and obtain signed Permissive Use Agreements. 
  • Puts together quotes for materials orders and assists in researching new equipment. 
  • Train lower-level Hydrologic Data Collection Specialists. 
  • Train for the next level in the Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist series. 
  • Performs other related work as required. 

HDS III:

  • All Level 1 & 2 Examples of Work Performed in addition to the following: 
  • Troubleshoots and repairs hydrometeorologic instrumentation used in hydrometeorologic data collection 
  • Serve as party chief in using a level to establish preliminary elevations of gages and reference monuments. 
  • Conducts site investigations and recommends locations for installation of data collection systems. 
  • Uses acoustic doppler current profilers to measure discharge at hydrologic monitoring sites 
  • Observes and notes hydraulic or environmental conditions that may affect a stage-discharge relationship, identifies appropriate cross section locations for conducting discharge measurements 
  • Puts together materials, equipment, and supply orders to support the bureau (HDS office), and writes purchasing memo and completes any required district documentation necessary including sole source 
  • Train lower level Hydrologic Data Collection Specialists. 
  • Train for the next level in the Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist series. 
  • Performs other related work as required. 

HDS IV:

  • All Level 1,2, & 3 Examples of Work Performed in addition to the following: 
  • Performs data quality assurance for water levels, rainfall, net and total radiation, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity and evaporation
  • Develops and implements data logger programs for data collection 
  • Computes hydrologic records of continuous streamflow. Develops simple stage discharge ratings. 
  • Responds to public inquiries and complaints regarding data collection, hydrologic conditions, and site monitoring construction 
  • Performs coordination or organizational tasks that support the hydrometeorologic data collection network. 
  • Manages contracts under $5,000 
  • Train lower level Hydrologic Data Collection Specialists 
  • Train for the next level in the Hydrologic Data Collection Specialist series. 
  • Performs other related work as required. 

 Minimum Qualifications:

HDS I:

  • High School diploma or GED. 
  • Preferred knowledge and/or experience in with agriculture or electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry trades. 
  • Valid drivers’ license. 

HDS II:

  • High School diploma or GED. 
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in hydrometeorologic or water related data collection. 
  • Preferred electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry experience. 
  • Valid drivers’ license. 

 HDS III:

  • Associate degree in any of the natural sciences or engineering and a minimum of two (2) year experience in water quality sampling or hydrologic field data collection, OR 
  • High School diploma or GED and a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in water quality sampling or hydrologic field data collection. 
  • Preferred electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry experience. 
  • Valid drivers’ license. 

 HDS IV:

  • Associate degree in any of the natural sciences or engineering and a minimum of four (4) years’ experience in water quality sampling or hydrologic field data collection, OR 
  • High School diploma or GED and a minimum of six (6) years’ experience in water quality sampling or hydrologic field data collection. 
  • Preferred electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry experience. 
  • Valid drivers’ license. 

 Additional Details:

Base Salary HDS I:  $25,646.40

Base Salary HDS II: $29,099.20

Base Salary HDS III: $33,009.60

Base Salary HDS IV: $37,440.00

Starting salary commensurate with selected candidate's competencies and qualifications.
